Where the keywords come from

Each lookup asks DataForSEO Labs for keyword suggestions: real searches that contain your topic, from its database of Google searches in the country you picked. A topic like coffee grinder brings back searches such as best coffee grinder for espresso or manual coffee grinder, rather than loosely related terms.

Most topics have far more suggestions than one lookup returns. The page shows 50 of them, sorted by search volume, and says how many exist in total. Each country is searched in its main language, across the 94 countries DataForSEO Labs covers.

How to read the numbers

Search volume

An estimate of how many times a month the keyword is searched on Google in that country, averaged over the last year and based on Google Ads data. Google groups close variants such as plurals and misspellings, so two keywords can share a number. Read it as an order of magnitude, not a count.

Keyword difficulty

A score from 0 to 100 estimating how hard it is to reach the first page, based on the links pointing at the pages that already rank there. It is relative: a new site should look for low numbers, and an established one can take on higher ones.

CPC

What advertisers pay on average for a click on this keyword in Google Ads, in US dollars. Even if you never buy ads, a high CPC is a sign the searchers are worth money to someone.

Search intent

  • Informational: the searcher wants to learn something. Guides and explainers rank.
  • Commercial: they are comparing options before buying. Reviews and comparisons rank.
  • Transactional: they are ready to buy or sign up. Product and pricing pages rank.
  • Navigational: they are looking for a particular site or brand.

Picking keywords worth a page

Start with keywords whose intent matches a page you could actually write. A product page will not rank for an informational question, and a blog post rarely ranks for a transactional one.

Then trade volume against difficulty. A keyword with a few hundred searches and a low difficulty often brings more visitors to a young site than a head term it cannot reach. Several close keywords with the same intent usually belong on one page rather than one page each.

Why there is a daily limit

Every lookup buys data from DataForSEO, which IndexZero pays for. To keep the tool free and without an account, each visitor gets a limited number of lookups a day, the tool has a daily limit overall, and a quick browser check runs before each lookup. The same topic and country are served from a cache for a day and do not count again.

The limits reset at midnight UTC. The tool only answers its own page: scripts and agents get the same data from IndexZero's MCP server, where research is paid for from a workspace's credits.

Frequently asked questions

Is this keyword generator really free?
Yes. There is no account and nothing to pay. Each lookup buys keyword data that IndexZero pays for, so there is a daily limit per visitor and a short browser check before each lookup.
Where does the search volume come from?
From DataForSEO Labs, which estimates average monthly Google searches for each keyword in the country you pick, based on Google Ads data. Close variants such as plurals can share one number.
What does keyword difficulty mean?
It is a 0 to 100 estimate of how hard it is to reach Google's first page for the keyword, based on the links pointing at the pages that rank there now. Lower is easier.
Why do I only see 50 keywords?
Each free lookup returns 50 suggestions, sorted by search volume, and the page shows how many exist in total. In IndexZero, keyword research combines several sources, takes more than one seed at a time, and returns far longer lists that you can save to a project.
Which countries and languages does it support?
The 94 countries DataForSEO Labs covers, each in its main language. Keyword research in IndexZero also covers the countries Labs does not, from Google Ads data.
