SEO prompts for AI agents

Each prompt is one SEO job an agent connected to IndexZero can finish on its own. Replace the placeholders, paste it, and check that the agent calls the tools listed under it.

  1. Find the rankings closest to a real gain

    Spends no credits

Using my connected Search Console for example.com, list the queries where I rank between positions 5 and 20, with the page ranking for each. Pick the five pages where a better title or an extra section is most likely to move them up, and say why for each.

Tools: get_striking_distance. Needs Search Console connected to the project.

  2. Find queries that show up but don't get clicked

    Spends no credits

From my Search Console data for example.com over the last 28 days, find queries with plenty of impressions and a click-through rate well below the rest of the site. For each, name the page and draft a title and meta description that match what the searcher wants.

Tools: get_search_console_performance. Needs Search Console connected to the project.

  3. Find search traffic that doesn't convert

    Spends no credits

Join my Search Console and Google Analytics data for example.com and list the pages that get search traffic but rarely lead to a key event. Rank them by how much traffic is at stake and suggest one change for each.

Tools: get_search_opportunities. Needs both Search Console and Google Analytics connected.

  4. Check whether Google indexed your important pages

    Spends no credits

Inspect these URLs in Search Console and tell me which aren't indexed, when Google last crawled each one, and which canonical Google chose: [paste URLs]

Tools: inspect_urls. Needs Search Console connected to the project.

  5. Audit the site and group the fixes

    Spends credits

Check my credit balance, then run a site audit of example.com. Wait until it finishes, then group the issues by the fix they need, critical first, with the number of pages each one affects. Don't change anything on the site yet.

Tools: whoami, run_site_audit, get_audit_status, get_audit_issues. The cost scales with the number of pages crawled.

  6. Research keywords you can realistically win

    Spends credits

Look at example.com's organic footprint, then research keywords from these seeds: [seed 1], [seed 2]. Drop anything too difficult for a site of our size, group the rest by intent, and show me the 20 best before saving any of them with the tag [tag].

Tools: get_domain_overview, research_keywords, save_keywords. Volumes and difficulty are third-party estimates.

  7. Find who you actually compete with in search

    Spends credits

Using the keywords I've saved for example.com, find the domains that rank alongside me most often. Separate direct competitors from publishers and marketplaces, and tell me which three are worth studying.

    Tools: list_saved_keywords, find_serp_competitors

  8. See which competitor pages bring in their traffic

    Spends credits

Show me the pages that bring competitor.com the most organic traffic and the keywords each one ranks for. Which of those topics does example.com not rank for at all?

Tools: get_domain_top_pages, get_ranked_keywords. Traffic figures are third-party estimates, not measurements.

  9. Track positions for the keywords that matter

    Spends credits

Create a weekly rank tracker for example.com with my saved keywords tagged [tag]. Tell me what one check will cost before running anything, and wait for my go-ahead.

Tools: list_saved_keywords, create_rank_tracker, estimate_rank_tracker_cost, run_rank_tracker. Creating a tracker and estimating its cost are free; each check costs.

  10. Check whether AI assistants mention you

    Spends credits

Check how often ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews mention [brand] compared with [competitor 1] and [competitor 2], and which sources they cite. Then ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity "what's the best [category] tool?" and tell me who each one recommends.

    Tools: get_brand_visibility, run_ai_prompt

  11. Check local rankings from where customers search

    Spends credits

Check where [business name] ranks in Google Maps for "[service]" from the center of [city]. Show the top five listings and how their ratings and review counts compare with ours.

    Tools: get_local_serp_results, search_local_businesses

Start with the ones that spend no credits

The first 4 prompts read your own Search Console and Google Analytics data. It's measured, it costs no credits, and it's usually enough to find the first thing worth fixing.

The rest buy live search data. Keyword volumes, domain traffic and backlink counts are third-party estimates: good for comparing options, but not a measurement of anyone's real traffic.

Writing your own

  • Name the site. A project already pins a domain, a country and a language, but say which project when you have several.
  • Say what you want back: a ranked list, a table, one recommendation. Given an open question, an agent returns everything it found.
  • Ask for a balance check before paid calls, and for a cost estimate and your go-ahead before a rank tracker run.
  • Say what not to do yet: don't save keywords, don't create a tracker, don't edit the site.
  • Ask which source each claim came from when the agent mixes IndexZero data with its own web search. IndexZero has no live SERP tool and can't fetch other sites' pages, so anything about a results page layout or a competitor's copy comes from the agent's browsing.

What you need

An MCP client such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex, and an IndexZero workspace on Starter ($29 a month) or above, which is where MCP access starts. On Pro, SAM, the assistant inside the app, calls the same tools, so these prompts work there without setting up a client.

For whole workflows rather than single jobs, the SEO agent skills pack gives the agent step-by-step instructions for audits, keyword research, competitor analysis and more.
