Duplicate title tags: how to find and fix them

Two or more pages have exactly the same title tag. Search engines use the title to tell pages apart, so duplicates compete with each other and often get rewritten in results. Put the attribute that makes each page different into the title template, or, if the pages really are the same, consolidate them.

How the audit flags it
After the crawl, pages with identical title text are grouped, and every page in a group of two or more is flagged. Only indexable 2xx pages take part, and a page whose canonical points at another URL is left out, since that duplicate is already handled. The match is exact. Each issue lists up to three of the other URLs in its group.
How to check
Site crawl only. Needs every page's title to compare against.

Why duplicate titles matter

The title is the strongest on-page statement of what a page is about, and the headline of its search result. When ten pages all say Products | Acme, nothing in the title helps a search engine decide which one answers a query, or helps a searcher decide which result to click.

Google asks for distinct title text on each page and names boilerplate titles as a problem it may correct by writing a title link of its own. The result is a headline you did not write.

Duplicate titles are also a symptom. They often point at duplicate pages, at pagination or filters that create near-identical URLs, or at a template that was never given a title field.

The usual causes

  • A template with a fixed title, such as every blog post titled Blog | Acme.
  • Paginated lists where page 2, 3 and 4 keep page 1's title.
  • Filter, sort or tracking parameters that produce separate crawlable URLs of one page.
  • Variants of one product (sizes, colours) with a page each and the same title.
  • The same page reachable at two paths, for example with and without a trailing slash, with no canonical.

How to fix it

Sort each duplicate group into one of two cases, because they have opposite fixes.

Different pages, same title

Rewrite the template so the title includes whatever makes each page distinct: the post title, the product name and variant, the category, the location, or Page 2 for pagination. Put the distinguishing words first and the brand last.

The same page at several URLs

Do not write new titles for copies. Choose the URL that should rank, add rel="canonical" pointing at it from the others, and 301-redirect the copies where you can. Once the copies point elsewhere, the audit stops grouping them.

Titles are compared across the whole crawl, so this check needs a site audit. A single-page tool cannot see what the other pages are called. The free meta tag checker is still useful for previewing a rewritten title on one URL.

Fix it with a coding agent

Connect Claude Code, Cursor or Codex to IndexZero's MCP server, open your site's repo, and paste:

Run a site audit of example.com and wait until it completes. Read the duplicate-title issues and sort each group into two cases: different pages that share a title, and one page reachable at several URLs. For the first, find the title template in this repo and add what makes each page distinct. For the second, tell me which URL should be canonical and why. Show me the diff before committing.

Behind that prompt the agent calls run_site_audit, polls get_audit_status until the crawl completes, and reads get_audit_issues with issueType: "duplicate-title". Your repo is where the fix happens: IndexZero reads your site and never changes it.

Frequently asked questions

Will duplicate titles get my site penalised?
No. There is no penalty. The cost is weaker signals: pages that are harder to tell apart, results Google may retitle, and clicks lost to vaguer headlines.
Are duplicate titles on paginated pages a problem?
They are worth fixing, and the fix is small: add the page number to the title of page 2 onward. Canonicalising every page back to page 1 is the wrong fix, because the later pages list different items.

Audit the whole site

Find every page with this issue

An agent connected to IndexZero's MCP server can crawl the whole site, read the issues of one type, find the templates in your repo and fix them, then re-crawl to confirm. The crawl itself spends no credits; only the optional Lighthouse sample does. The free plan includes the MCP server, audits of up to 50 pages, and 2,000 credits a month.
